What is Maternal-Fetal Medicine?
Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) — also known as perinatology or high-risk obstetrics — is a subspecialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology focused on the diagnosis and management of complications in pregnancy affecting the mother, the fetus, or both.
This resource hub is dedicated to advancing MFM education and clinical practice across the Caribbean — providing students, trainees, and practising clinicians with evidence-based tools, clinical cases, and reference materials.

What MFM specialists assess
Clinical assessment tools
Two of the most important surveillance tools in MFM practice. Toggle between normal and pathological states to understand clinical significance.
Umbilical Artery Doppler
Pulsatility Index (PI) · INTERGROWTH-21st reference
Normal umbilical artery flow
Positive end-diastolic flow throughout the cardiac cycle. S/D ratio, RI, and PI within normal limits for gestational age. Associated with normal fetal well-being.
Fetal Growth Chart
Estimated Fetal Weight (g) · INTERGROWTH-21st 2016
Appropriate for gestational age (AGA)
EFW tracking between the 10th and 90th centiles. Normal fetal growth velocity. Continued routine surveillance as per gestational age.
